all-state girls stand at the mhsaa podium to get their awards

The Otsego girls track and field team wrapped up its season at the MHSAA Division 2 State Finals on Saturday, highlighted by an All-State performance from junior thrower Madden Fitzpatrick.

Fitzpatrick delivered the best throw of her career in the discus, launching a personal-record mark of 125 feet, 1 inch to finish seventh in the state and earn All-State honors. Her performance capped off an impressive postseason run that saw her continually improve at each championship meet. After throwing a personal best of 115 feet at the conference championships, Fitzpatrick followed it up with a 120-foot throw at regionals before reaching another level at the state finals.

“Madden is a kid that loves to compete, and over the last three years she has worked so hard at this,” said Head Coach Justin Scott. “I am so excited to see her finding success and achieving at such a high level.”

The Bulldogs were represented across a variety of events at the state meet. The 4x800-meter relay team of Aly Verhage, Ady Verhage, Addy Sabatke, and Skylar Mejeur placed 12th, while the 4x400-meter relay team of Ady Verhage, Olivia Klimp, Kyla Haak, and Skylar Mejeur also earned a 12th-place finish.

Individually, Skylar Mejeur placed 21st in the 800-meter run. Aly Verhage finished 16th in the 1,600-meter run and 12th in the 3,200-meter run, while Addy Sabatke placed 14th in the 3,200 meters. Olivia Klimp competed in both hurdle events, finishing 17th in the 100-meter hurdles and 20th in the 300-meter hurdles. Audrey Holmes added a 13th-place finish in the shot put.

The state finals appearance marked a successful conclusion to the season for the Bulldogs, with Fitzpatrick's All-State finish serving as a fitting highlight for a team that competed among Michigan's best throughout the spring.
