Otsego boys baseball team poses with coaches for a photo with the district championship trophy

The Otsego High School baseball team is heading to regionals after an impressive performance Saturday, claiming the Division 2 District Championship with victories over Allegan and Plainwell.

The Bulldogs opened the day with a 10-2 win over Allegan in the district semifinal before defeating Plainwell 4-1 in the championship game to secure the district title.

Strong pitching played a key role in both victories. Senior Matthew Jackson set the tone in the semifinal, attacking the strike zone and keeping Allegan's offense in check while receiving plenty of run support from the Bulldogs' bats.

In the championship game, Kaleb Hildebrand delivered one of his strongest performances of the season. Hildebrand threw a complete game on just 79 pitches, recording six strikeouts and no walks as he helped lead Otsego to the district crown.

Nate Maisel and Dillon Campbell each collected four hits across the two games, while Nolan Whitmore added three hits. Landon Wrobleski, Jaxon Ray, Kaleb Hildebrand, and Brennan Perry each recorded two hits on the day. Reid Anderson and Merrill Bailey also contributed offensively.

Wrobleski drove in four runs during the district tournament, while Perry added three RBIs and Anderson drove in two.

The district championship is the culmination of the boys' commitment to improvement. After a disappointing start to the spring season and facing challenges during conference play, the Bulldogs shifted their focus toward preparing for the postseason.

Coach Meert introduced a daily "One Thing" routine in early May, asking players to identify one thing they did each day that would help them succeed on district championship day and one area they still needed to improve. The team embraced the challenge, putting together a strong month of May that ultimately led to Saturday's championship celebration.

With the district title secured, Otsego now advances to the Regional Semifinal on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in Coldwater, where the Bulldogs will face Coldwater High School. A victory would send Otsego to the Regional Final on Saturday.

Congratulations to the Bulldog baseball team on an outstanding achievement and best of luck as they continue their postseason run.
