Otsego Grad Featured in ArtPrize

Jeffrey Bohl, an Otsego graduate, is one of the 955 featured artists at this year’s ArtPrize competition in Grand Rapids. He is a sculptor and every one of his creations is unique; he doesn’t create the same thing twice.

This is Bohl’s second time at ArtPrize. His first entry was in 2011 with a collection of smaller pieces.  “That led to my first ongoing gallery representation,” he explains. Currently both The Button Gallery in Douglas, MI and East End Gallery in Marshall, MI represent his work. “I have had several individual pieces on outdoor display for year-long stints, including one currently in Chelsea, MI,” he says. You can see that here:

This year’s entry is called Funky Bronze. It’s described as a “whimsical, thought-provoking collection of bronze sculptures with great visual appeal!” There are five bronze sculptures displayed on pedestals at the Grand Rapids Public Museum, a prime spot for ArtPrize artists. You can see more on his ArtPrize page here.

Bohl looks back on his time in high school as a catalyst for where he is now. "I wouldn't be an artist today if not for my Otsego art teacher, Janelle Turner Oberhill. Her support and inspiration made the difference for me,” he says.

Bohl is a teacher himself at Coldwater High School. Art is not his full-time job, but it’s certainly a passion. His advice for current students: If art gives you joy, pursue it.  No matter what, keep it in your life.  It brings a balance, sense of peace, and feeling of participating in the human experience that few other things can. Take risks. Put yourself out there. Embrace it and let it fill your life!”
